Fuji the Apple Fox
Do you know that foxes eat apples?
I asked on Patreon what y’all wanted as the next fall-themed pattern and the winner was a “fox.” But I wasn’t too sure what kind of fox I wanted to make. So I googled, “foxes” and learned that foxes eat apples. There was even a video of a fox eating an apple pie!
I thought this was so perfect since “apple orchards,” “apple picking", and “apple pie” are all adorable fall things, so I decided to make an apple fox!
I definitely wanted this fox to have a basket of apples as if they were out picking apples and I also couldn’t let go of the idea of an apple pie, so I thought, “why not have both?'“
Here’s the concept sketch that I made!
As excited as I was about this concept, I was a little worried.
Since I use blanket yarn to make my plushies, I really wasn’t sure if I could make the apples small enough. I also wanted the apples to have stems and leaves, which meant even smaller details that I had to make with this chunky yarn. On top of that, the apples had to be small enough to fit in a basket and on the pie. And then the basket and the pie had to be able to fit onto a fox and I really didn’t want to make the fox too large of a plushie.
Usually, I would have just used a thinner yarn to make the apples’ details, but I really wanted to challenge myself to make it all in one yarn so it’s easier for any crocheter who wanted to make this fox. That way they won’t need more than one type of yarn. Also they can make the fox in a different yarn than what I used and they won’t have to worry about adjusting the proportions for the apples.
It was no easy task . . . but I did it!
Spoilers: The full fox ended up being slightly smaller than the goblin and unicorn as well, which I’ll take as a win!
Look at these tiny little chunky yarn apples!
Here’s what an apple looks like on my fingertips to really put into perspective how small it came out to be.
The next challenge was making a basket that can hang on the arms. After several hours of attempting different arms and basket designs, I realized that my original drawing was sadly, just not going to work out.
Instead, I settled with just having the basket hang off of one arm. I was a little disappointed since I really liked what I originally envisioned, but even so, I think the apple basket is my favorite part!
I think it’s so cute that it can be its own stand alone pattern- but I’m biased.
Now that the hardest parts were done, everything else went relatively quickly. I just had to put everything together and there it was: “Fuji the Apple Fox” named after “Fuji apples”of course.
This fox is now my new favorite crochet pattern that I’ve designed- Blossom the Goblin, step aside!
Of course, I had to have it tested! I chose a bit of a smaller tester group this time since my last few were a little overwhelming. Check out the foxes that they made! You can find these amazing crocheters on Instagram!
The first small version of the fox was made out of Alize softy yarn and a 4 mm hook in case you want to make one that looks like that one! But @fiya.crochet advises that “this yarn is quite thin and fluffy, so it will be a little difficult for beginners . . . because the loops are not easily visible.”
