Witch Turtle Pattern
If you’re looking for a fast, spooky, turtle-ly adorable crochet project, I have just the thing for you! Here’s how to crochet a turtle with a witch hat! This project can be made in roughly an hour, so it’s perfect for any last second Halloween makes, markets, or just as a cute, fast project. I actually made this originally as a part of my own halloween plushie drop a while back and it’s one of my favorites from that collection.
The turtle portion is made in the same way as my original turtle pattern. For your convenience, I’ve included both how to make the witch hat and also the original turtle pattern in this free pattern.
If you need more help, you can find a video tutorial of the turtle portion here. The witch hat uses the same skills that are used for the turtle, but if you’d like more help with the color changing portion of the witch hat, here’s my color changing tutorial. Use color changing method 2 for the witch hat!
The written pattern can be found below or an ad-free PDF version with more pictures can be found on my Patreon.
“Can I sell the plushies that I make with this pattern?”
Yes! Absolutely! What you do with the plushies you make is completely up to you! You may gift, donate, or sell any plushies that you make with any of my patterns. I would greatly appreciate if you could give "The Mary Jay" pattern credit and link back to this pattern when possible.
However, please do not sell, copy, or duplicate (to distribute) the crochet pattern itself in any form without permission.
Here’s the written pattern:
Skills and Abbreviations (In U.S. terms)

Recommended Materials:
(Based on what I used to make the turtle in the sample photo.)
Super Bulky Weight Yarn (#6) in purple, brown, yellow, and black (or the colors of your choice)
7 mm Crochet Hook (or a similar hook size)
Two 18 mm Safety Eyes
Stuffing
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Stitch Markers (Optional)
Pins (Optional)
“Where can I get the materials?”
You can find most of these items in a craft store, sometimes in places like Walmart, or on my Amazon Storefront. My Amazon Storefront contains my own personal favorites to use! It is an affiliate link, which means I will earn a small commission at no extra cost to you if you use it to make a purchase. This is one way that helps support me and lets me continue to make content for you.
While I do get some harder-to-find yarn colors off of Amazon (the ones linked on my storefront), I do also get a lot of my yarn from Joann! The colors that I used for the turtle in the sample photo is pow purple, sunsoaked , coal, and misty jungle green (these are also affiliate links as welll!) However, I have noticed some changes to the shades since I made this pattern, so the colors may not be exact to the turtle I made.
“Can I use a different yarn or hook size?”
Yes! The above yarn sizes and hook size are recommendations based on what I used to make the plushie in the sample photo. Feel free to switch up the yarn or hook size based on what you have available or your preference.
If you are using a different yarn or hook size, don’t forget to make sure that the yarn and hook size work well together. For amigurumi, it is often recommended to use a hook size that is 1-2mm smaller than the recommended hook size on the yarn label for tighter stitches and less holes in your project. However, different crocheters have their own preferences on hook size and you are welcome to follow your own preference.
Please note that the plushie may vary in size with different yarn and hook sizes.
“Can I replace the safety eyes with something else?”
Yes! Just like the yarn and hook size, the safety eyes listed are just what I used to make the plushie in the sample photo. Feel free to use a similar eye size or switch it up with felt, buttons, or even just embroider it with yarn.
Please note that safety eyes can be choking hazards and are not recommended for plushies made for young children or pets.

Assembly:
If you need more help with how to attach the pieces for the turtle portion, please visit my video tutorial at timestamp: 44:29
Head
Sew the head onto the body where the top half of the head overlaps with the brown of the shell and the bottom half overlaps with the green belly of the body.
Tail
As a reminder, do not stuff the tail. Instead, pinch the opening together to sew the tail on flat.
Sew the tail directly across from the head between rounds 10 and 11 of the body (where the brown meets the green).
Legs
As a reminder, do not stuff the legs. Pinch the opening together for each leg piece to sew the legs on flat.
Sew two of the legs onto each side of the turtle’s head. They should also be sewn in between rounds 10 and 11 of the body (where the brown meets the green).
Sew the last two legs onto each side of the tail. They should also be sewn in between rounds 10 and 11 of the body (where the brown meets the green).
Once again, if you need a visual or more help with the assembly portion, please visit my video tutorial.
Witch Hat
Sew the hat onto the top of the head.
